How to start learning Quranic Arabic
Start with a few frequently encountered words, practise recalling their meanings, and revisit them in the ayat where they appear. Short daily practice is a useful routine. Pair vocabulary study with a qualified teacher for pronunciation, grammar and interpretation.
QuraniLingo is a free Quranic Arabic study companion for the browser and Android. Its guided lessons, dictionary and Quran reader help you connect a word you have practised to its Quranic context. It is a public beta, not a replacement for a course or teacher.
A simple ten-minute practice session
- Review first. Open the Learn section and review words you have already met. Try recalling a meaning before checking the answer.
- Take one small lesson. Work through the next lesson at your own pace. Read the Arabic carefully; do not rush to accumulate points.
- Return to the ayah. Open the Quran reader or dictionary and look at the word in context. Notice nearby words and repeated forms.
- Listen, then check. Use available audio to hear the word or recitation. Ask a teacher about sounds or meanings you are unsure of.
- Come back tomorrow. A learning streak records practice, not mastery. Understanding a passage takes more than recognising individual words.
Vocabulary, roots and translation are different tools
A vocabulary gloss is a compact aid to recognition. It does not carry every meaning a word can have in a passage. A root connects related words, but knowing the root does not automatically tell you the meaning of every form. Grammar, context and reliable instruction still matter.
QuraniLingo lets you explore words and their occurrences rather than treating a single English equivalent as a complete explanation. Do not use lesson scores as a religious qualification or as evidence that you can interpret independently.
Do I need to know the Arabic alphabet?
Familiarity with the letters and vowel marks makes Quranic Arabic study easier. If you are beginning from zero, work on reading and pronunciation with a teacher alongside vocabulary practice. Transliteration can be a temporary aid; it cannot represent every Arabic sound accurately.
Is QuraniLingo free, and do I need an account?
The learning app is free and works without an account or subscription. Progress is saved on the device. Optional account sync needs an internet connection; file backups in Settings → Your data provide another way to keep a copy. Donations are optional.
Can I learn on my phone?
Yes. Open the web app on Android or iPhone, or use the signed Android APK. The Android app includes Quran text; new audio recordings require connectivity unless already saved. See the audio and offline guide.
Sources and further study
The app distributes source and licence notices with its content. The Quranic Arabic Corpus offers word-level linguistic analysis, and Tanzil’s documentation explains its Quran text project. These references complement, rather than replace, qualified instruction. See the bundled content notices.
