Prayer times and Qibla: check the settings that matter
Prayer times depend on location, date, time zone and calculation settings. Qibla guidance depends on the coordinates you choose and, for compass mode, the quality of the device’s sensor reading. Check your local mosque’s timetable and use a map bearing when the compass is unreliable.
Why two prayer apps can show different times
Prayer-time calculations use the sun’s position. Calculation methods can use different dawn and night angles or a fixed interval for Isha. The Asr convention and high-latitude adjustment can also change the result. A mosque may publish its own timetable or congregation time, which is not necessarily the calculated start time.
In QuraniLingo, open Prayer & Qibla, check the selected city or coordinates, and review the prayer calculation settings. Compare the displayed date and time zone with your device. When travelling, do not assume yesterday’s saved location is your current location.
A quick accuracy checklist
- Location: choose the correct city or allow location when you want to use your current position. Location permission is optional.
- Date and clock: make sure the device date, time zone and daylight-saving setting are correct.
- Method: choose the calculation convention appropriate to your community, including the Asr setting.
- Local comparison: check your mosque’s published timetable and distinguish start times from congregation times.
- Reminder permissions: on Android, review notification and device battery settings. A browser reminder is not a dependable closed-app alarm.
Finding the Qibla without trusting a shaky compass
QuraniLingo provides Qibla guidance from the location you choose. Map mode is useful for comparing the bearing with landmarks. Compass mode needs suitable device sensor support and permission where required. A missing sensor, magnetic interference or an uncalibrated device can make its arrow misleading.
Move away from metal furniture, magnets and electronics if the compass drifts. Compare the map bearing with a known landmark or an established mosque direction. If readings disagree, do not keep rotating until an uncertain sensor happens to show the result you expected.
Can I use prayer times offline?
Calculations and the bundled Qibla map run on your device once the required app content is available. Keep a location selected before going offline. The Android app is the more predictable option for bundled content; the browser depends on cached pages and available storage.
Location privacy and calculation references
A saved prayer location stays on your device unless included in optional account sync. Usage analytics does not receive your coordinates or prayer settings. See the privacy notice for account, hosting and processor details.
The calculation library’s Adhan documentation describes its methods and parameters. This guide explains app settings; it is not a religious ruling. Ask a knowledgeable local authority about the convention your community follows.
